Protesters raided New Town Plaza shopping centre in Hong Kong on Friday night as the government announced a ban on face masks.

The group set about smashing glass, breaking into shops and setting off fire hydrants inside metro stations in a campaign of violent direct action.

Fires were started outside as the crowds moved quickly to escape police.

Thousands have taken part in unplanned protests across the territory after Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam invoked colonial-era emergency powers to ban facial coverings in response to violence during recent protests. The ban will take effect at midnight ( 16:00 GMT).

Protests began in March over plans to extradite suspected criminals to mainland China. Despite the bill being cancelled, hundreds of thousands continue to protest until other demands are met.
