Thousands of protesters marching to cross the Line of Control, a ceasefire line in Kashmir, arrived in Garhi Duppatta near Muzaffarabad on Saturday demanding the Line of Control (LoC) be abolished.

"We want the ceasefire line to be abolished, it is only possible when both armies (India and Pakistan) move back and United Nations peace keeping troops replace them. The state then must be united for a free and fair referendum under international supervision so the people can decide their future," said Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) President Tauqir Gailani.

"We are expressing our solidarity with more than eight million, living under curfew, and we want to tell the international community that this sinister blood line on the chest of Kashmir must be abolished," he said, stating people live "under siege in Indian Occupied Kashmir."

JKLF supporters walked 23km (14 miles) from capital Muzaffarabad to reach Garhi Duppatta. Protesters will then move to Chakothi at the border and attempt to cross the LoC on their way to Srinagar, according to JKLR Spokesperson Rafiq Dar. Authorities fear they may be casualties if the march goes ahead as planned.

Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir has been in lockdown since August, after the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi stripped the region of its autonomous status. Communications, freedom of movement and local press have all been heavily restricted.
